Sunday, I went to the National Museum Art and the Natural History Museum in Maputo. The art in the museum was very dark and everyone in the paintings looked very tortured. We determined that a lof of it was from the civil war era of Mozambique, which is fairly recent. It made me realize how lucky we are in the US that we have been immune to such war and torture for almost two centuries. I am not sure how to explain the Natural History Museum, except to say that another name for it could be the National Taxidermy Museum. There were lots of dead stuffed animals. There was a small exhibit that had all different kinds of sea shells collected in Mozambique. I decided to spend the most time looking at these. I was afraid the mixture of my malaria medication and dead stuffed animals would lead to some crazy nightmares. They had an exhibit of elephant embryos that were preserved in formaldelhyde. I could explain why they had this, but it would take up too much space in my blog.
Then we went ate some prawns...Mozambique is famous for these and other seafood. My prawns came with the heads on. And yes, I still ate them and got rid of the heads all by myself. Steve even has a picture for anyone who won't quite believe that I was able to handle this. I guess when in Mozambique, do as the locals. However, when I return to the US, I may still need a good friend to cut the heads off of any shrimp for me. (You know who you are!)
Then finally, we finished out the weekend at a local pizza/pub watching the US lose to Brazil in the finals of the Confederate Cup. It is amazing how popular soccer (or futbol or whatever you want to call it) is here with all of the US folks. I guess it is one of those sports that is easier to follow oversees than in the US.
